Sometimes a positive situation can carry its own obstacles and challenges.
Alison had a great dilemma; she had two great job offers from two different companies. Amazing, right?! She had been putting it out into the Universe for several months, applying her passion, and following her heart, and the Universe delivered two-fold! But when the excitement wore off, she realized that she was standing in the middle of a decision, unsure which direction to turn. She was frozen. How could she choose between the two and ensure that she is following the path she is intended to follow? Both were equal offers, both exciting and both offering a fulfillment all their own. How would she know which one is the “right” one to take?
Alison has been a client of mine and a friend for several years. She has worked through different obstacles and challenges, but this was a new one and she immediately reached out. She had always dealt with problems, but how does she face a dilemma like this one?
During our conversation, we worked together to find out what her heart truly desired. Listening to her energy and her responses, she was able to determine which path to choose. This is something you can do for yourself when you find it hard to make a choice, to overcome an obstacle, and move forward.
Ask yourself:
- What is important to you in your life outside of work; like your time with family, hobbies, and schedule?
- What feels the most fulfilling personally?
- Visualize each scenario as if its already happened. What feels the most expansive and energizing?
When you tap into your inner wisdom, like Alison did, there is energy behind the way you talk about one versus the other. When you examine your problems, there will be energy behind one decision or the other. You will feel something that is not “rationalized.” Most likely you have already gone back and forth in your mind, rationalizing the problems you are facing.
These decisions are not to be made by your mind, but rather from your heart.
This means it is time to tap into your heart’s deepest desires to determine your answers. There are a few ways you can do this beyond answering questions such as the ones listed above.
Another method for uncovering the messages from your heart includes completing a guided visualization.
To begin, find a comfortable place to sit and breathe deeply into your belly and lower back. Allow your body to relax and your mind to focus on your breathing. Continue to breathe deeply and slowly. Draw forward an image of you happy and content. Notice the feelings that arise in you. Notice the emotions you feel in this situation. Notice any sounds that you hear when you are happy. Are they people’s voices, nature sounds, or music? Listen to the sounds that arise around you when you are happy and content. Take a deep breath in and notice any smells that surround you in this happy state. See if you can sense or even smell the smells of this contentment. Feel the temperature of this state of being. Do the rays of the sun warm you, or do you have the cold nipping at your nose from the air conditioning in a room? Allow your body now to sense those temperatures. Finally, look around you, where are you? What are you doing? Are there people surrounding you or animals or are you alone? Using all your senses together now, notice how you are happy and satisfied with your life and your surroundings. Acknowledge this comfort and allow yourself to feel these sensations. When you feel ready, allow yourself to let this visualization go and return back to your breathing. Focus on taking long and slow breaths in, sending the breath into your belly and lower back. When you are ready, open your eyes and come back into your present moment.
You have taken a brief moment to tap into the sensations that are most important to you. These feelings and states of being are the situations that your heart longs for the most. Chances are they will unveil the decision you need to make that best aligns with these.
Like Alison, when you tap into your heart and uncover what you really need for yourself, you will be able to make a decision. And not only that, but you will feel confident about the decision or action that you make!
